JB Iwan Sulistyo was born in Kudus, Central Java, a small town renowned for its clove cigarettes and situated some 50 Km away from Semarang. While still in elementary school, Iwan already showed signs of his passion for painting, beginning his debut by making numerous pictures of his favorite movie stars, of animals, and natural sceneries using color pencil, ballpoint and/or watercolors. His high-school years were spent in Semarang, where he participated in a drawing competition organized by the Gallendra Art Shop in 1970 and, there, for the very first time, he came in touch with oil-colors. He won First Prize. Since then, he has never stopped painting. JB Iwan Sulistyo brushed up his skills by studying Fine Art at Trisakti University; he also took up one year painting classes at the Jakarta Art Institute and was actively involved in the community of artists or ‘Sanggar’ as he became member of Sanggar Prima Devita (1983) and Sanggar Kamboja – Bali (1991). In 1980, JB Iwan Sulistyo tied the knot with his beloved Inggriani. The couple is blessed with three children, Edo, Vina and Aditya.
JB Iwan Sulistyo’s first solo exhibition was held at Balai Budaya Jakarta (Jakarta Cultural Hall) in 1984. To date, he has held 20 exhibitions and has published books that chronicle his long journey as an artist “Moon Over the Horizon”, his first book, was launched at the Batavia Art Gallery, Stamford House, in Singapore. The launching of his second book, “The Modern Expressionism of JB Iwan Sulistyo”, took place at Galeri Nasional Jakarta (Jakarta National Gallery) in conjunction with his 19th solo exhibition. His 20th and most recent solo exhibition was held at the Linda Gallery in Singapore. JB Iwan Sulistyo also took part in many joint exhibitions, touring around Asia – among others to: Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, together with other member-artists of the Asian Watercolor Confederation. Presently, JB Iwan Sulistyo is Chairman of the Indonesian Watercolor Society, succeeding Pak Barli Sasmitawinata, upon request of the same Pak Barli in 2002.
